Canyon Matka

Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia offers a great number of treasures which you must visit when in town. One of those treasures that hides countless ‘gold coins’ is the canyon Matka which is located 17 kilometres southwest of Skopje.

The Matka lake is considered to be the oldest artificial lake in the country. The place is famous for the large number of endemic species which make the place itself rare in every sense.

There is a boat trip which will lead you to a cave. Speaking of caves, there are 10 caves and the most famous one is Vrelo Cave which is listed among the top 77 natural sites in the world.

There is also a great variety of churches and monasteries which were built many centuries ago and therefore are full of history.

There are many activities you can do in Matka. You can have a boat trip, you can swim in the lake, you can fish or hunt, or, if you are a mountaineer you can come in the climbing season which starts around Easter and ends in November.

There are more restaurants in which you can taste seafood or whatever you desire while enjoying the view. The place is teeming with tourists from the whole world, so you can hear different languages being spoken around you.
